An imminent future.

The electrification of transportation is the transition from internal combustion engines to electrically powered propulsion systems. Its main objective is to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency, encompassing everything from 100% electric vehicles to hybrids and hydrogen alternatives.

Types of electrified vehicles

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEVs): They operate exclusively on electricity stored in rechargeable batteries and do not emit polluting gases.
  • Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs): They combine a combustion engine with an electric motor and a battery that can be recharged by connecting it to the electrical grid.
  • Self-charging hybrids (HEV): They use a combustion engine and an electric motor that recharges itself autonomously while driving (braking and deceleration), without plugs.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs): They generate their own electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Europe are booming. They currently account for nearly 20% of total new vehicle registrations, with year-on-year monthly growth peaks of around 38%.

Adoption varies drastically by region:

  • Absolute leader: Norway tops the world list, where electric vehicles already account for nearly 90% of new car sales.
  • Main markets by volume: Germany leads in units sold, followed by France and the Netherlands
  • The market in Spain: Although it has experienced sustained growth, Spain remains below the European average, representing a more modest market share.
